Hybrid rail. Pinned posts (you set them) sit alongside the top-viewed posts of the last 30 days. Drifts slowly on its own, stops the moment anyone interacts.

Why this beats stacked category rails

One rail carries the color story. The grid keeps the diversity.

Three surfaces, three jobs. Hero surfaces the one story worth reading first. Rail surfaces a curated and earned mix. Grid gives everyone their own path in.

Mixed palette in the rail. Because the rail is not gated by category, the 8 cards can be plum, gold, magenta, cream, dark. Two of the cards are pinned (◆ icon top-right); the other six auto-fill from 30-day views.

Auto-scroll behavior. Drift about 40px per second. Pauses on hover and when any card has focus. Stops entirely on the first user interaction (swipe, arrow, keyboard) and does not resume. Respects prefers-reduced-motion. Loops seamlessly via card duplication so there is no visible reset.

Score model. score = pinned_weight + views_30d + (recency_boost if pub_date < 14d). Pinned always wins. Featured hero is excluded from the rail. Below the total-signal threshold (early months), rail is 100 percent pinned. Same UI, curated end-to-end until data catches up.
